Khvay Samnang is one of Cambodia’s most important artists amongst the new generation. Using many approaches such as photography, video, installation, sculpture and performance, he explores new perspectives and interpretations of history, culture and current affairs. He often deals with themes related to the Cambodian context, which, in his humanistic approach also reflects on universal themes.
Fluidity, historical significance, and ongoing social and political issues around land have fascinated Khvay for many years. His photographic and video work “Untitled” (2010-2011) shows the artist pouring sand over himself in Phnom Penh’s lakes, many of which have been filled with sand for private development with forced eviction of many residents. “If you want to learn, you must spend time, and really enjoy!” said Khvay, whose work is often filled with sense of humor. This exhibition features “Enjoy My Sand” where the artist wore large horns made with human hair and carried people he met at the beach in Singapore. This “Cow Taxi” series continues from one in Asakusa, Tokyo, during the artist’s stay in the residency at Tokyo Wonder Site as well as in Phnom Penh. “Enjoy My Sand” is a humorous critique surrounding the geopolitical and economic questions of land and resource management, in this case the export of river sand from Cambodia to Singapore, where the coastlines are constantly expanded for recreation. To offer signals, symbolism, and questions in many layers engaging seemingly absurd act of performance lies in the core of his artistic practice.
