Artist Profile

Masako Ando

Masako Ando was born in the Aichi Prefecture in 1976. She graduated from the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Aichi University of the Arts in 2001. She currently lives and works in Seto city, and is an Associate Professor at Aichi University of the Arts.

Her major solo exhibitions include “Hara Documents 9: Masako-Ando – The Garden of Belly Button”(Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, 2012), “Masako Ando ’Songbook’ Commemorating the release of her first art book” (8/ ART GALLERY/ Tomio Koyama Gallery, Tokyo, 2016). Working with motifs such as young children, woolen knitted items, animals, plants and flowers, Ando creates paintings with eloquently smooth surfaces that take advantage of the characteristics of oil paint, and are conceived through various pictorial elements such as detailed depiction and her composition of the picture plane that incorporates the presence of large blank spaces. In contrast, while engaging with the same subject matter, her pencil drawings distinct for their meticulously elaborate execution, illustrate a much harder and solid texture.
Since 2018, she is engaged in creating ceramic relief works, along with charcoal, pencil, and water color drawings that have developed a new frontier within her artistic practice.

Naoki Koide

Naoki Koide was born in Aichi prefecture in 1968. He graduated from Tokyo Zokei University in 1992. He currently lives and works in Chiba. Since the group exhibition “Magic Room” (curated by Satoshi Okada) in 2003, the solo exhibitions “A Couple in the Bathroom” (2004), “Marriage” (2006), and “In These Days” (2008), “Maternity Leave” (2011), this marks the artist’s fifth solo exhibition with Tomio Koyama Gallery. His other major exhibitions include “Cafe in Mito” (2004, Art Tower Mito, Tochigi), “Magical Art Life” (2006, Tokyo Wonder Site, Shibuya), “Fiction@Love” (2006, MOCA Shanghai), “neoneo Part1[BOY]” (2009, Takahashi Collection Hibiya, Tokyo), “Echigo-Tumari Art Trienial” (2009, Nigata) and “Paul Clay” (2011, Salon 94 Bowery, New York).

Satoko Nachi

Satoko Nachi was born in 1982 in Tokyo. She graduated from the Fine Art Department of Nagoya University of Arts. She currently lives and works in Aichi. She held 3rd solo exhibition with Tomio Koyama Gallery, after one in Tokyo in 2010 and in Singapore in 2013. Her major group exhibitions include “Takahashi Collection 2014 Mindfulness!” (Nagoya City Art Museum, 2013), “JAPANCONGO” (Centre National d’Art Contemporain, Grenoble, 2011), “Children’s Art in Mie” (Mie Prefectural Art Museum, 2011), “Passion Fruits Picked from The Olbricht Collection”(me Collectors Room Berlin, Berlin, 2010, and “FLOWERS AND LANDSCAPE, Claude Monet and Young Japanese Artists” (Contemporary Art Museum Kumamoto, 2009). Her work created during her stay at the Ohara Museum’s ARCO project (as Artist in Residence in Kurashiki, Ohara) is being presented at the Ohara Museum from September 27th to November 27th 2016.

Mika Ninagawa

Photographer, Director
Mika Ninagawa has been awarded numerous photography awards, such as Kimura Ihei Award. She has directed a number of video works including the films “Sakuran” (2007), “Helter Skelter” (2012), “Diner”(2019) and “No Longer Human”(2019). Currently her original drama for Netflix, “Followers” is released in 190 countries worldwide. In 2008, her solo exhibition “Mika Ninagawa: Earthly Flowers, Heavenly Colors” toured several museums throughout Japan, attracting a total of 180,000 visitors. In 2010, Ninagawa published a monograph by Rizzoli N.Y. In 2012, Ninagawa won the Silver Prize at the Shindo Kaneto Awards with “Helter Skelter”. She held extensive solo exhibitions mainly in Asian cities such as Taipei and Shanghai where they gathered the greatest number of visitors in their history. Her solo exhibition “Into Fiction/Reality Mika Ninagawa” started its tour from Contemporary Art Museum Kumamoto in 2018 and will travel until 2021 throughout museums in Japan.

Satoshi Ohno

Satoshi Ohno is based in the foot of Mt. Fuji, which embraces ocean of trees. It’s a harsh environment where life and death are repeated, but is also like a cradle and mother’s body that gives birth and nurture various lives. Inspired by the environment, his self-portraits and paintings depicting primeval forests evoke sharp and inherent human senses that are vitalized by the natural pressures felt from the wilderness. His “Prism” series depicts geometrical and man-made beauty as a symbol of the human civilization, and the aggressive and violent progress of the post-modern worldwide capitalism, yet exploring something simply beautiful at the same time. The relationship between the self-portraits from primeval forests and the “Prism” of human civilization may have similarity with the tension depicted in the scene where the black geometrical monolith appears in front of people and animals in the natural scenery in the movie “2001: A Space Odyssey”.

Satoshi Ohno was born in 1980 in Gifu. He received B.A. from Tokyo Zokei University, Tokyo in 2004, and currently lives and works in Yamanashi, Japan. His major solo exhibitions include “Prism Violet” at The Contemporary Museum Honolulu, Hawaii (2007), “PROPHET” (2009) “BYE BYE SUNSET” (2013) at Tomio Koyama Gallery, Tokyo, “Beautiful Dreaming.”(2015) at 8/ ART GALLERY/ Tomio Koyama Gallery. He has participated in many museum group exhibitions including “Art Scope 2012-2014 – Remains of Their Journeys” at Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo(2014), “The Way of Painting” at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery, Tokyo (2014), and “Takahashi Collection 2014 Mindfulness!” at Nagoya City Art Museum, Aichi. Recently, he jointed a group exhibition “Come after Magic” at aura gallery taipei, Taipei (2015). His work is included in the public collections such as The National Museum of Art, Osaka, Hara Museum of contemporary art, Tokyo, and The JAPIGOZZI Collection and National Gallery of Victoria.

Kishio Suga

Kishio Suga was born in Morioka city, Iwate Prefecture in 1944. In 1968 he graduated from the Department of Painting at Tama Art University, and served as a central member of the art movement Mono-ha that took place from the late 1960s to the 1970s. For over 50 years since, Suga has continued to pursue a consistent philosophy and actively develop his artistic practice, paving his own unique path as one of the leading figures of Postwar Japanese art in our times. Even in recent years when the reevaluation of Mono-ha has been gaining much international recognition, he persists in further deepening his contemplation, with his unfaltering passion and enthusiasm for his practice serving to define the presentness of his work.

Since his first solo exhibition in 1968, Suga has presented work on over 400 occasions in numerous exhibitions both within Japan and abroad. Recent years in particular have seen remarkable developments and achievements in his career. In 2016 he held solo exhibitions at Pirelli Foundation’s HangarBiocca in Milan and Dia: Chelsea New York, in addition to a two-person exhibition with Karla Black at The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh. He was selected for the 57th Venice Biennale, “VIVA ARTE VIVA” in 2017, receiving high acclaim for Law of Situation in which he recreated of one of his early representative works in the form of an installation floating on water. In that same year Suga participated in the group exhibition “Japanorama: New Vision of JAPAN from 1970,”curated by Yuko Hasegawa that was held at the Centre Pompidou-Metz in France.

Suga’s works are also housed in numerous prominent museums throughout the world including the Centre Pompidou, Dia: Chelsea, the Tate Modern, Dallas Museum of Art, M+, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo.
