Artist Profile

Atsushi Fukui

Atsushi Fukui was born in 1966 in Aichi prefecture. In 1989, he completed his B.A. in oil painting at Tokyo University of the Arts. He is currently based in Yamanashi prefecture.

His major solo exhibitions include “air” (2016, yu-un, Tokyo) and “Council of Backpacking” (2015, ROPPONGI HILLS A/D GALLERY, Tokyo). His first show at Tomio Koyama Gallery was the group exhibition “morning glory” curated by Yoshitomo Nara (Tokyo, Japan, 2002). Thereafter, he held 6 solo exhibitions at Tomio Koyama Gallery.
Fukui’s major group exhibitions include “TAKAHASHI COLLECTION Mindfulness!” (2013, Kirishima Open-Air Museum, Kagoshima, Japan [touring Sapporo Art Museum, Hokkaido, Japan]) “ORANGE SKY” (2011, RH Gallery, New York), “Punkt Art 2011 David Sylvian-in cooperation with Atsushi Fukui uncommon deities” (2011, Sorlandets Kunstmuseum, Kristiansand, Norway), “convolvulus: Atsushi Fukui / Hideaki Kawashima” (2009, Michael Ku Gallery, Taipei), “The Masked Portrait” (2008, Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York), “ROPPONGI CROSSING” (2004, Mori Art Museum, Tokyo). His works have been included in the public collections of The Olbricht Collection (Germany), The JAPIGOZZI Collection (US/ Switzerland), The Takahashi Collection (Japan) and The Japan Foundation (Japan).

Daisuke Fukunaga

Objects depicted in Daisuke Fukunaga’s painting are something too ordinary for us to pay attention everyday – places or objects we have forgotten, such as a shabby vacant lot, a dark basement of the construction building without wiring, old cleaning tools like mops, tires, and wastes. With his “representationalism” approach, these objects seem to throw off its functional meanings attached to them and wriggle like animals, as if they had emotions and personalities.
Personified objects against the dramatic backgrounds in Fukunaga’s paintings evoke strongly and theatrically, emphasized by being depicted on large canvases. The senses of endless depth and presence as materials attract viewers.

Fukunaga Daisuke was born in Tokyo, in 1981. He graduated from the oil painting course of Tama Art University in 2004, lives and works in Tokyo, Japan. He has participated in group shows such as “AFTER THE REALITY 2” curated by Hiromi Yoshii (Daichi Projects, New York, 2008), “VOCA Exhibition 2009” (The Ueno Royal Museum), and “The Way of Painting” (Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery, 2014). Also as a member of the artist group MIHOKANNO, he participated in group exhibitions “Hello MIHOKANNO” (Tokyo Wonder Site Shibuya, Tokyo, 2009) and “GOOD NIGHT MIHOKANNO” (Akibatamabi 21, 3331 Arts Chiyoda, 2011). He won the first Kinutani Koji Award sponsored by the Mainichi Shimbun in 2009. At Tomio Koyama Gallery, Fukunaga has held solo exhibitions in 2006, 2008, 2011, 2013 and 2015.

Satoko Nachi

Satoko Nachi was born in 1982 in Tokyo. She graduated from the Fine Art Department of Nagoya University of Arts. She currently lives and works in Aichi. She held 3rd solo exhibition with Tomio Koyama Gallery, after one in Tokyo in 2010 and in Singapore in 2013. Her major group exhibitions include “Takahashi Collection 2014 Mindfulness!” (Nagoya City Art Museum, 2013), “JAPANCONGO” (Centre National d’Art Contemporain, Grenoble, 2011), “Children’s Art in Mie” (Mie Prefectural Art Museum, 2011), “Passion Fruits Picked from The Olbricht Collection”(me Collectors Room Berlin, Berlin, 2010, and “FLOWERS AND LANDSCAPE, Claude Monet and Young Japanese Artists” (Contemporary Art Museum Kumamoto, 2009). Her work created during her stay at the Ohara Museum’s ARCO project (as Artist in Residence in Kurashiki, Ohara) is being presented at the Ohara Museum from September 27th to November 27th 2016.

Satoshi Ohno

Satoshi Ohno is based in the foot of Mt. Fuji, which embraces ocean of trees. It’s a harsh environment where life and death are repeated, but is also like a cradle and mother’s body that gives birth and nurture various lives. Inspired by the environment, his self-portraits and paintings depicting primeval forests evoke sharp and inherent human senses that are vitalized by the natural pressures felt from the wilderness. His “Prism” series depicts geometrical and man-made beauty as a symbol of the human civilization, and the aggressive and violent progress of the post-modern worldwide capitalism, yet exploring something simply beautiful at the same time. The relationship between the self-portraits from primeval forests and the “Prism” of human civilization may have similarity with the tension depicted in the scene where the black geometrical monolith appears in front of people and animals in the natural scenery in the movie “2001: A Space Odyssey”.

Satoshi Ohno was born in 1980 in Gifu. He received B.A. from Tokyo Zokei University, Tokyo in 2004, and currently lives and works in Yamanashi, Japan. His major solo exhibitions include “Prism Violet” at The Contemporary Museum Honolulu, Hawaii (2007), “PROPHET” (2009) “BYE BYE SUNSET” (2013) at Tomio Koyama Gallery, Tokyo, “Beautiful Dreaming.”(2015) at 8/ ART GALLERY/ Tomio Koyama Gallery. He has participated in many museum group exhibitions including “Art Scope 2012-2014 – Remains of Their Journeys” at Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo(2014), “The Way of Painting” at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery, Tokyo (2014), and “Takahashi Collection 2014 Mindfulness!” at Nagoya City Art Museum, Aichi. Recently, he jointed a group exhibition “Come after Magic” at aura gallery taipei, Taipei (2015). His work is included in the public collections such as The National Museum of Art, Osaka, Hara Museum of contemporary art, Tokyo, and The JAPIGOZZI Collection and National Gallery of Victoria.

Midori Sato

Midori Sato was born in 1984 in Aichi Prefecture. She graduated from Oil Painting Course, School of Art, Nagoya University of Arts in 2008, and studied at Ecole nationale des beaux arts de Dijion, France as an exchange student. She received M.F.A from Graduate School of Tokyo Zokei University in 2010. She studied in Paris as a recipient of the POLA Art Foundation award for overseas research in 2017.

A closet packed full of colorful dresses, an array of high-heeled shoes on shelves, vividly colored flowers: Midori Sato shows us things that every one yearns to see. Yet if we turn our attention to the details of her work, bold brushstrokes and an intentionally uneven paint coating tinge her subject matter with the contours of abstraction. This abstraction demonstrates the force of the power that draws the viewer into the picture plane.

Her major solo exhibitions include “Floating Drapery” (Tomio Koyama Gallery, Tokyo, 2022), “Diaphanous petals” (The Pola Art Museum, Atrium Gallery, Kanagawa, 2019), “Bouquet” (8/ ART GALLERY/ Tomio Koyama Gallery, Tokyo, 2019), “Orange Glow” (Green Art Flowers Gallery, Paris, France, 2018) and “Reflections” (Roppongi Hills A/D Gallery, Tokyo, 2017). She participated in group exhibitions such as “Aichi Triennale 2016 rainbow caravan” (Aichi, 2016) and “Embracing for Painting” (Shiseido Gallery, Tokyo, 2015). In 2013, she received the Ohara Museum of Art Prize at “VOCA 2013″(The Ueno Royal Museum, Tokyo) and the artwork was housed in the Museum.
