Satoshi Ohno is based in the foot of Mt. Fuji, which embraces ocean of trees. It’s a harsh environment where life and death are repeated, but is also like a cradle and mother’s body that gives birth and nurture various lives. Inspired by the environment, his self-portraits and paintings depicting primeval forests evoke sharp and inherent human senses that are vitalized by the natural pressures felt from the wilderness. His “Prism” series depicts geometrical and man-made beauty as a symbol of the human civilization, and the aggressive and violent progress of the post-modern worldwide capitalism, yet exploring something simply beautiful at the same time. The relationship between the self-portraits from primeval forests and the “Prism” of human civilization may have similarity with the tension depicted in the scene where the black geometrical monolith appears in front of people and animals in the natural scenery in the movie “2001: A Space Odyssey”.
Satoshi Ohno was born in 1980 in Gifu. He received B.A. from Tokyo Zokei University, Tokyo in 2004, and currently lives and works in Yamanashi, Japan. His major solo exhibitions include “Prism Violet” at The Contemporary Museum Honolulu, Hawaii (2007), “PROPHET” (2009) “BYE BYE SUNSET” (2013) at Tomio Koyama Gallery, Tokyo, “Beautiful Dreaming.”(2015) at 8/ ART GALLERY/ Tomio Koyama Gallery. He has participated in many museum group exhibitions including “Art Scope 2012-2014 – Remains of Their Journeys” at Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo(2014), “The Way of Painting” at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery, Tokyo (2014), and “Takahashi Collection 2014 Mindfulness!” at Nagoya City Art Museum, Aichi. Recently, he jointed a group exhibition “Come after Magic” at aura gallery taipei, Taipei (2015). His work is included in the public collections such as The National Museum of Art, Osaka, Hara Museum of contemporary art, Tokyo, and The JAPIGOZZI Collection and National Gallery of Victoria.
Kishio Suga was born in Morioka city, Iwate Prefecture in 1944. In 1968 he graduated from the Department of Painting at Tama Art University, and served as a central member of the art movement Mono-ha that took place from the late 1960s to the 1970s. For over 50 years since, Suga has continued to pursue a consistent philosophy and actively develop his artistic practice, paving his own unique path as one of the leading figures of Postwar Japanese art in our times. Even in recent years when the reevaluation of Mono-ha has been gaining much international recognition, he persists in further deepening his contemplation, with his unfaltering passion and enthusiasm for his practice serving to define the presentness of his work.
Since his first solo exhibition in 1968, Suga has presented work on over 400 occasions in numerous exhibitions both within Japan and abroad. Recent years in particular have seen remarkable developments and achievements in his career. In 2016 he held solo exhibitions at Pirelli Foundation’s HangarBiocca in Milan and Dia: Chelsea New York, in addition to a two-person exhibition with Karla Black at The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh. He was selected for the 57th Venice Biennale, “VIVA ARTE VIVA” in 2017, receiving high acclaim for Law of Situation in which he recreated of one of his early representative works in the form of an installation floating on water. In that same year Suga participated in the group exhibition “Japanorama: New Vision of JAPAN from 1970,”curated by Yuko Hasegawa that was held at the Centre Pompidou-Metz in France.
Suga’s works are also housed in numerous prominent museums throughout the world including the Centre Pompidou, Dia: Chelsea, the Tate Modern, Dallas Museum of Art, M+, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo.
Rieko Hidaka was born in 1958 in Tokyo. In 1983, she graduated from the Department of Japanese Painting College of Art and Design (BFA) and completed the Graduate School of Art and Design (MFA) in 1985 both at Musashino Art University.
For one year from 1995, she studied in Germany under Japanese Government Oversea Study Program for Artists by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Japan.
Her major solo exhibitions include “Recent Works 22” (The National Museum of Art, Osaka, Japan,1998), “The Space of Trees” (Art Kite Museum, Detmold, Germany, 2003) and “Sky, Trees and In Between” (Vangi Sculpture Garden Museum, Shizuoka, Japan, 2017). Her major group exhibitions include “Chikaku: Time and Memory in Japan” (Kunsthaus Graz & Camera Austria, Graz [traveled to Museum of Contemporary Art, Vigo, Spain / Taro Okamoto Museum of Art, Kawasaki, Kanagawa, Japan]) and “Rising Sun, Melting Moon -Contemporary Art in Japan” (The Israel Museum, Jerusalem, 2005-2006) and “Kami. Silence -Action” (Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, Germany, 2009-2010).
Keisuke Yamamoto was born in 1979 in Tokyo. After graduating from the department of Sculpture of Tokyo Zokei University in 2001 he stayed at the university as a research student until 2003. In 2018 he graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts’ Graduate School of Fine Arts, majoring in sculpture. He currently lives and works in Kanagawa. This show at Tomio Koyama Gallery is his sixth solo exhibition, and his major group exhibitions include “VOCA 2008” (2008, The Ueno Royal Museum, Tokyo), “Winter Garden: The Exploration of the Micropop Imagination in Contemporary Japanese Art” (2009, Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, traveled to several international museums), “Twist and Shout: Contemporary Art from Japan” (2009, Bangkok Art and Culture Centre), and “Nostalgia and Fantasy: Imagination and Its Origins in Contemporary Art” (2014, National Museum of Art, Osaka). His work is collected by the National Museum of Art, Osaka and international private collections.
Ellie Omiya was born in Osaka in 1975, and graduated from the University of Tokyo, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. She began to pursue an independent career after working at an advertising agency, engaging in projects across various genres as an accomplished author, stage play director, screenwriter and director for television programs and films, and also as a radio personality. From 2012 she started holding interactive solo exhibitions presenting works conveying various images and text, which are completed through viewer’s participation. Omiya has gained high acclaim for her solo exhibitions including “To Convey Emotions” (toured PARCO MUSEUM and other venues, 2012-13), “To Be Alive” (PARCO MUSEUM, 2013), and “Message from the Starry Sky” (toured MITSUBISHI ESTATE ATRIUM and other venues, 2013-2014).
Omiya’s journey as an artist began in 2012, when she was asked to produce a live drawing at the Gallery of Horyuji Treasures inside the Tokyo National Museum to celebrate Mr. Soichiro Fukutake’s receipt of the Montblanc de la Culture Arts Patronage Award. This first ever drawing she produced, “Celebration Melody: Naoshima” (currently in the private collection of Mr. Fukutake), while unexpectedly marking the beginning of her painterly practice, had received much attention and acclaim as her debut work.
Ever since, Omiya has held numerous solo exhibitions such as “emotional journey” (Daikanyama Hillside Terrace, Tokyo) and “painting dreams” (Shibuya Hikarie 8/ CUBE, Tokyo) in 2015, followed by her first museum solo exhibition in 2016, “Sincerely Yours, Ellie Omiya”(Towada Art Center, Aomori), in which she also presented works outside the museum in the city’s local shopping arcade. In 2017, she held the solo exhibition “This is forest speaking” (Kanaz Forest of Creation, Fukui), and in 2018 participated in “Rokko Meets Art 2018” where she created and presented “Mansion of a Widow.” The work was featured in her 2019 solo exhibition “Beautiful Days” (Daikanyama Hillside Terrace / Hillside Forum, Tokyo) along with her new large-scale installation “One Day’s Picnic.” She continues to rapidly develop and progress in her career as an artist, publishing her new catalogue of illustrations and texts, “Whale of Rainbow” from Bijutsu Shuppan-sha in February 2019, also in March holding “A Wonderful Forest” (TICOLAT TAMURA, Hong Kong) which marks her first solo exhibition at an overseas gallery.
Satoshi Hirose was born in 1963 in Tokyo. He graduated from Tama Art University in 1989 and two years later he received an Italian government scholarship and moved to Italy. In 1996-97, he stayed in Italy under POLA Art Foundation Grants Program. He then completed a degree at Milan’s Brera Academy of Fine Arts in 1997, and studied in New York under Japanese Government Overseas Study Program for Artists provided by the Agency for Cultural Affairs in 2008-09. He is currently based in Milan and Tokyo.
His major solo exhibitions include “Lemon Project 03” (The Ginza Art Space, Tokyo, 1997), “Paradiso- Criterium 34” (Contemporary Art Center, Art Tower Mito, Ibaraki, Japan, 1998), “2001” (Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, Hiroshima, 2000), and in more recent years “Heteronym” (Galleria Umberto Di Marino, Napoli, 2015), and “Vis à Vis Flâneur – SATOSHI HIROSE” (Fondazione Molise Cultura, Campobasso, Italy, 2016).
He has presented work in numerous group exhibitions including “Neo Tokyo” (Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, 2001), and “Beppu Contemporary Art Festival 2012: Mixed Bathing World” (Beppu City, Oita, Japan, 2012), as well as a commission “Your Sky, My Sky: sky project for Arts Maebashi” Arts Maebashi, Gunma, Japan (2013). He has held five solo exhibitions at Tomio Koyama Gallery in 2000, 2005, 2008, 2009, ad 2013. Hirose also has worked on commissions in collaboration with companies.This July, he is creating an artwork in the new building of PeptiDream, a pharmaceutical company that pursues drug development.
