Tomio Koyama Gallery will move from Kitasando to Roppongi, Tokyo, and open a new space in gallery building “Complex 665” in which it will reside together with ShugoArts and Taka Ishii Gallery. Our first exhibition in Roppongi will be Mika Ninagawa’s Light of.

The exhibition features the series of Light of, the eloquence of which captures overflowing lights sparkling in darkness at fireworks or outdoor music festivals, as well as the exuberance and desires of people present there at those moments. On the other hand, fireworks look like a form of hope risen up in the air, and the hands reaching out for the heavens look as if they seek salvage within the lights.
When the lights are bright, the colors glow. When the lights are strong, the shadows are deep. Ninagawa’s work resonates susceptibly with a darkness that adjoins the world of light. A sense of visual flamboyance that celebrates the opening of the gallery space in the Complex 665 Building; an urge to crystallize moments of beauty; and the artist’s eyes reaching our out for something eternal are all impressed upon the viewers strongly. The exhibition inaugurates the gallery’s new chapter in Roppongi.
It is hoped that by joining the various museums such as the Mori Art Museum; The National Art Center, Tokyo; the Suntory Museum; and 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, as well as Roppongi Hills and the galleries located in the Piramide building, that these three galleries will be further stimulus to activate a new art district within Roppongi.
