Sakura Wada was born in 1999 in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. She graduated in 2024 from Tokyo Zokei University. She is currently based in Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture. In the same year, she was awarded both the Tomoko Yabumae Prize and the Tomio Koyama Prize at Art Award Tokyo Marunouchi 2024.
Rooted in painting, Wada’s practice expands into various forms of expression beyond the boundaries of genre, including installation, video, and performance, incorporating familiar materials such as fabrics and embroidery from everyday life. Motivated by a deep interest in the equilibrium within human relationships and the power balance they entail, she seeks to avoid the “one-sided” viewing experience of paintings hung on walls. Instead, she creates works that stand on their own feet, are monumental in scale like walls, or are painted on both the front and back. In doing so, she encourages an active and multifaceted engagement between the viewer and the work, fostering moments in which the work itself may serve as a “hint” for new awareness.
Her solo exhibitions include “) (” (Tomio Koyama Gallery Tennoz, Tokyo, 2025) and “emocleW” (Shimokitazawa Arts, Tokyo, 2024). Her major group exhibitions include “Landscapes with Dogs” (Tomio Koyama Gallery Maebashi, Gunma, 2024).
