Artist Profile

Shintaro Miyake

Shintaro Miyake makes free use of various means to create his unique artistic world, such as the picture-scroll-like drawings in which characters enact a variety of scenes, and his ‘live drawing’ performances wearing originally-designed character costumes which seem to have jumped straight out from his work. The freely soaring wit of his artistic world has attracted an international audience.

Shintaro Miyake was born in 1970 in Tokyo. In 1996, he completed his B.A. in Tama Art University, Tokyo. Miyake has held many solo exhibitions such as in Italy, Austria, Berlin, and Taiwan. Miyake’s selected solo exhibitions include “But anyway, it’s the turn of the era” (Roppongi Hills, A/D GALLERY, Tokyo, Japan, 2015) , “VIKING AGE” (Gerhardsen Gerner, Berlin, Germany, 2013) and “Beaver no Seikatsu” (Sandra and David Bakalar Gallery, Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, MA, USA, 2006). Selected group shows include “ROKKO MEETS ART 2015” (Rokko International Musical Box Museum, Kobe, Hyogo, Japan 2015) and “To Be with Art is All We Ask” (Astrup Fearnley Musuem, Oslo, Norway, 2012) among others. This September- November, Miyake will have the group show “ROKKO MEETS ART 2016” (Rokko International Musical Box Museum, Kobe, Hyogo, Japan 2016).
