Ryan McGinley’s utopian photographs, with their subtle but strong sense of composition and color, capture the essence of his generation. In 2000, at the age of 22, McGinley opened a guerrilla show of color photographs depicting moments in the lives of the people around him, members of New York’s Lower East Side youth culture. He also produced a 50- page book of these photographs, lovingly titled The Kids Are Alright (the title is from a documentary film about the rock band, The Who), which attracted widespread attention and ultimately led to a solo show at the Whitney Museum of American Art, making him the youngest artist ever to receive this honor.

Distinguished by their sophisticated colors and rigorous composition, McGinley’s photographs are filled with an independent spirit. Most of the models that serve as his subjects are nude, and from the images of running, frolicking and relaxing youths naked in the wild, the viewer experiences a world akin to a true Utopia. The manner in which they stand in front of the camera, exposing their true selves without hiding anything, can also be interpreted as a manifestation of today’s Internet age in which the boundary between public and private is rapidly disappearing.

Ryan McGinley has had solo exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of Art (NY, 2003), MoMA PS1(NY, 2004), MUSAC (Madrid, 2005), the Kunsthalle (Vienna, 2006), as well as Daelim Museum, (Seoul, 2013). His latest solo exhibition “BODY LOUD!” is being held now at Tokyo Opera Art Gallery, Tokyo, 2016.
